Located near Cape Portland on Tasmania’s remote far north-east coast, Petal Point offers free, rugged beachside camping in the wild beauty of the Waterhouse Conservation Area. mania+2

No fees and no bookings: camping is first-come, first-served. 

Toilet facilities (drop/hybrid style) only; you must bring your own water, firewood and be fully self-sufficient. 

Pets are allowed (dog-friendly) in many parts of the site.

The access road is unsealed and enters a remote area; the campsite is exposed and can be windy. Tyre pressures and careful driving are advised.

Only open between November long weekend and Easter. Closed by Parks for the rest of the year.

 

 Facilities are minimal: there is a pit toilet, but you must bring your own drinking water and firewood.
 

It is suited for tents and smaller vehicles (not large caravans), no powered sites, and vehicles are not allowed onto the beach

There are a number of beautiful walks to waterfalls and through forests.

Great little gift shop, clean toilets and a covered BBQ area to die for. Dump point and water at Scottsdale.

Northeast Park is around 63 km from Launceston and provides donation camping sites suited to tents, caravans and campervans for up to 14 days. 

Amenities include coin operated hot showers and toilets, a coin-operated barbecue area, a dump point, walks, a children's playground as well as interpretive displays and small lakes.

Gold, gold, gold! Fossicking at Lefroy

Lefroy: The six pub town I have always found it rather interesting that the population and wealth of Australian historic mining areas seem to be always measured by the number of pubs (hotels) it had. Lefroy sits around 15 km south-east of the cottage and 58 km north-east of Launceston. Originally known as Nine Mile Springs it was changed to Lefroy in 1881 after the visit by the Acting Governor, Sir Henry Lefroy. It was a bustling town, which is said to have contained 5,000 people in its peak boom period of 1890-95. It was the fourth largest town in Tasmania,. Gold was known to exist in the hills around Lefroy in the 1840s, but exploration was discouraged because of a fear that the convicts would find out and rebel. Though now only a sleepy rural town with no retail activity at all, Lefroy had a race track, rifle club, cricket club and brass band.
