Nestled on the narrow isthmus that links the Forestier Peninsula to mainland Tasmania, Dunalley is a quiet fishing village with history, charm, and a strategic position for travellers heading toward Port Arthur or the east coast. 

The town is bisected by the Denison Canal, a hand-dug waterway (opened in 1905) connecting Frederick Henry Bay and Blackman Bay, complete with a working swing bridge that allows boats to pass.

Although small (population around 300), Dunalley is well-known for its hospitality, fresh seafood, and beautiful scenery. 

It’s a natural rest stop between Hobart and the Tasman Peninsula, and makes an ideal base for exploring Eaglehawk Neck, the Tessellated Pavement, and the Port Arthur Historic Site.

  • Bangor Vineyard Shed – A scenic cellar door with excellent food and local wine.

  • Sunset Beach – Just south of town, this quiet beach is perfect for an evening stroll or picnic.
  • Tasman Peninsula Day Trips – Visit the Blowhole, Devils Kitchen, and the historic penal settlement at Port Arthur.

Located directly behind the Dunalley Hotel at 210 Arthur Highway, Dunalley, this is a popular free (or donation-based) site suitable for self-contained caravans and campervans.

  • Gravel and grass parking areas, no power.
  • Public toilets available during hotel hours.
  • No water or dump point — bring your own supplies.
  • Great for an overnight stop with easy access to the pub and local shops.

Gold, gold, gold! Fossicking at Lefroy

Lefroy: The six pub town I have always found it rather interesting that the population and wealth of Australian historic mining areas seem to be always measured by the number of pubs (hotels) it had. Lefroy sits around 15 km south-east of the cottage and 58 km north-east of Launceston. Originally known as Nine Mile Springs it was changed to Lefroy in 1881 after the visit by the Acting Governor, Sir Henry Lefroy. It was a bustling town, which is said to have contained 5,000 people in its peak boom period of 1890-95. It was the fourth largest town in Tasmania,. Gold was known to exist in the hills around Lefroy in the 1840s, but exploration was discouraged because of a fear that the convicts would find out and rebel. Though now only a sleepy rural town with no retail activity at all, Lefroy had a race track, rifle club, cricket club and brass band.
