The site is adjacent to the historic Oyster Cove Inn itself, giving you convenient access to a welcoming pub & restaurant while still enjoying the tranquillity of a free-stay camp.

The spot is pet-friendly and allows caravans, camper-vans and motorhomes that are fully self-contained (on-board tanks required). Tents and camper trailers are generally not permitted. 

With no formal fee, it’s a smart budget option — but you’ll want to support the local inn’s business (grab a meal or drink!) and respect the site by leaving it clean.

Bruny Island

Located on Bruny Island (Tasmania) just south of the Barnes Bay area, this campsite offers a restful mix of bush and coastline – perfect for nature-based camping.


The setting combines coastal views and bushland, offering relaxed access to ocean/beach scenery as well as natural surrounds, and it is positioned for exploring southern Bruny, including walking, beach time and nature-watching.

Facilities are basic: expect pit toilets, possible access to non-treated tank water (seasonal) and no guarantee of firewood supplied — so bring essentials.

Camping here is typically first-come, and you’ll need a valid park pass for some areas of the island.

Roads to the campsite may include unsealed sections; allow extra travel time.

 Friendly staff in the pub, meals very nice, normal pub prices. General store 100 mtrs away, groceries and some veggies.

Cloudy Bay Camp — also known as the Cloudy Corner site — is tucked away at the far end of Cloudy Bay on Bruny Island, within the South Bruny


 It offers a remote camping experience with beach-front access and rugged coastal scenery.

Camping fees apply (for example ~$10 per night for 1-2 campers). You’ll need to self-register and pay on site (cash deposit box) in many cases.

To reach the site you’ll need a 4WD vehicle, as access involves driving roughly 3 km along the beach at low tide.

Simple amenities: pit toilets are available; water is non-treated tank water (seasonal) so you should bring your own potable water.

Franklin

There is typically a nightly fee (e.g., around AUD $10–$15) and a maximum stay (e.g., 4–6 nights) apply.

Useful facilities such as toilets, potable drinking water fill-points, a dump station, BBQ/picnic areas and walking tracks in the foreshore park.

Proximity to the town of Franklin means cafés, specialty shops and local attractions are just a short stroll away.

The camping area is located on a small promontory at the junction of the Huon and Kermandie Rivers, just off the Huon Highway, about 17 km south of Huonville, and is suitable for tents, caravans, camper‑trailers and motorhomes.

Cost is very low: around AU$10 per vehicle per night.

Self-contained RVs can stay up to 4 nights (96 hours) under RV‑friendly scheme.

Public toilets, dump point for RVs, town water available, picnic shelters & public BBQs (electric), children’s playground, and a nearby boat ramp, giving access to the Huon River.

Gold, gold, gold! Fossicking at Lefroy

Lefroy: The six pub town I have always found it rather interesting that the population and wealth of Australian historic mining areas seem to be always measured by the number of pubs (hotels) it had. Lefroy sits around 15 km south-east of the cottage and 58 km north-east of Launceston. Originally known as Nine Mile Springs it was changed to Lefroy in 1881 after the visit by the Acting Governor, Sir Henry Lefroy. It was a bustling town, which is said to have contained 5,000 people in its peak boom period of 1890-95. It was the fourth largest town in Tasmania,. Gold was known to exist in the hills around Lefroy in the 1840s, but exploration was discouraged because of a fear that the convicts would find out and rebel. Though now only a sleepy rural town with no retail activity at all, Lefroy had a race track, rifle club, cricket club and brass band. There were six hotels, three churches, a state and private grammar school, a masonic lodge and mechanics institute. The town h...
