The Abel Tasman Caravan Park is a family-friendly holiday park offering a range of accommodation from tents and caravans through to cabins. 

It lies in a highly convenient location—just minutes from the Spirit of Tasmania ferry terminal, with plenty of nearby shops, supermarket, bakery and pizza outlets.

The park is only around 1 km (or about 1.9 km by one measure) from the ferry ramp, making it ideal for arrivals and departures by sea. 

 The park offers powered and unpowered sites (for tents/caravans), drive-through sites for larger rigs, plus a collection of cabins ranging from basic budget cabins to family and premium cabins, and its features include BBQ areas, indoor & outdoor camp kitchens, laundry facilities, and a playground near the beach. 

 Dogs are permitted in parts of the park (though not all cabins are pet-friendly), so travellers with pets should check ahead.

 For families and groups: there’s a playground, “bouncing pillow”, camp kitchen, BBQ area and plenty of space to explore. 

 

Excellent location to use as a base: About halfway between Launceston and Burnie on Tasmania’s north coast, and around 90 minutes drive from Cradle Mountain.factor.

 Offering both powered and unpowered sites (with a modest number of powered sites), including for tents, caravans and motorhomes,  this park sits just behind the sand dunes of Turners Beach, giving direct and easy access to the shoreline.

Facilities iinclude clean shower and toilet blocks, laundry facilities, BBQ and camp kitchen areas. For example, showers were reported at ~$1 for hot water. 

Pet-friendly (with conditions) and in a very quiet, family-friendly setting.

Forth

Located on Mell Street in the small town of Forth (Tasmania, postcode 7310), the site is a grassy sports-ground setting that accommodates self-contained caravans and motorhomes for up to 48 hours, with a donation requested for its upkeep.  

Parking is around the oval with plenty of space, and basic amenities include toilets, drinking water and rubbish bins.  

 Being close to the town means convenience for a quick stop-over: the petrol station and local shops are nearby, and mobile phone reception is available. 

The camp is pet-friendly (on leash) and is most suited for self-contained rigs (tents are generally discouraged).

 It’s a no-frills, low-cost option for travellers looking to rest up, explore the area or access nearby attractions without staying in a full-service caravan park.

Free to use, but only for self-contained vehicles (no tents) and a maximum stay of 72 hours within a 14-day period.

Basic set-up: grassy area by the coast, no powered sites, no laundry/showers or extensive facilities.

 Nearby amenities: the village of Sulphur Creek / Penguin region has shops (e.g., IGA) and supplies; the campsite serves as a good base.

This site is good for large rigs, with sealed access road and room to manoeuvre. 

Max stay is 48 hours and vehicles must be self-contained (i.e., own toilet/waste) — no public toilets or drinking water onsitethere is no mains power, no fixed BBQs, limited shade. Bring your own water and prepare accordingly.  Dog restrictions may apply because of the penguin colony—check current signage.

Gold, gold, gold! Fossicking at Lefroy

Lefroy: The six pub town I have always found it rather interesting that the population and wealth of Australian historic mining areas seem to be always measured by the number of pubs (hotels) it had. Lefroy sits around 15 km south-east of the cottage and 58 km north-east of Launceston. Originally known as Nine Mile Springs it was changed to Lefroy in 1881 after the visit by the Acting Governor, Sir Henry Lefroy. It was a bustling town, which is said to have contained 5,000 people in its peak boom period of 1890-95. It was the fourth largest town in Tasmania,. Gold was known to exist in the hills around Lefroy in the 1840s, but exploration was discouraged because of a fear that the convicts would find out and rebel. Though now only a sleepy rural town with no retail activity at all, Lefroy had a race track, rifle club, cricket club and brass band.
